As July begins, peak season sets in and things quickly become busier than ever. Croatia’s unpredictable weather can often be traced back to its most unpredictable element: ‘bura’. This northerly breeze blows from coastal mountains downhill into the sea, carrying cold air with it and often creating quite an unnerving experience for sailors with little experience. Although its intensity decreases during afternoon hours (Split sailors often claim they have seen breaks for lunch!), in the evening it usually strenghtens again and causes havoc with navigation.
September and October bring Jugo winds back from their summer restful state, offering some superb sailing conditions. These powerful, regular winds can create waves as high as five meters; don’t underestimate them!

The Wind

Croatia offers ideal sailing conditions between April to May or September to November, when school holidays are less busy and you can experience beautiful weather and tranquil waters.
